How to Prevent Basement Flooding: 9 Proven Steps

1. Clean your gutters and fix downspouts

Clogged gutters overflow and dump hundreds of gallons of roof water against your foundation during a storm. Clean them every spring and fall, and extend every downspout 6-10 feet from the house — not the flip-up kind homeowners forget to lower. 2. Grade the soil away from your foundation

The ground should slope away from your house at least 6 inches over the first 10 feet. Where soil has settled into a dip against the foundation (very common in older Passaic homes), rain collects and pushes straight through the wall. Add clean fill dirt, compact it, and slope it outward.

3. Install or upgrade your sump pump

If you have a sump basin, test it: pour water in — it should kick on, pump down, and shut off.
