7 Sump Pump Failure Warning Signs

Short answer: if your pump is over 7 years old, runs constantly, or makes new noises, it's telling you it's about to quit — and it will quit during the worst storm, not on a sunny Tuesday. Here's what to watch for.

1. It's old — 7+ years and counting

Sump pumps live hard lives and most last 7–10 years. After that, every storm is a gamble. If you can't remember when yours was installed, assume it's old. 2. Strange new noises

A healthy pump hums. Grinding, rattling, or loud clunking on startup means worn bearings, a bent shaft, or a jammed impeller. A pump making new noises during a dry week will very likely die during the next heavy rain when it has to work hardest.

3. It runs constantly — or never stops

Some cycling during wet weather is normal, especially in high-water-table areas like Passaic or near the Hackensack River. But a pump that runs nonstop usually has a stuck float switch, a failed check valve letting discharged water flow back into the pit, or it's undersized for the water volume. Constant running burns out motors fast — and it often means the pump can't actually keep up.

4. Visible rust, corrosion, or a stuck float

Pop the pit cover and look. Heavy rust on the pump body, a corroded float arm, or mineral crust on the switch means the components are degrading. Manually lift the float — the pump should kick on immediately. If it hesitates, sticks, or doesn't respond, the switch is failing, and the switch is the most common failure point on the whole system.

5. It vibrates excessively when running

Some vibration is normal; violent shaking isn't. Excessive vibration usually means a damaged or debris-clogged impeller — the part that actually moves water. A wobbling impeller moves less water, strains the motor, and can crack the discharge piping. If your pump sounds like it's trying to escape the pit, it needs attention now.

6. No battery backup — and storms knock out your power

This isn't a pump defect, it's a system gap — and it's the most common reason Paterson and Clifton basements flood. The nor'easters and summer storms that dump the most water are exactly the storms that kill power. A perfect pump with no electricity is useless. 7. The discharge line is clogged, frozen, or too short

A pump can work perfectly and still flood your basement if the water has nowhere to go. Check that the discharge pipe runs well away from the foundation — not dumping right at the wall where water loops back.
